At 6 km away from Manciano, on the road to Scansano, you will find the charming village of Montemerano, which is included on the list of most beautiful towns in Italy.
Montemerano was originally built by the Aldobrandeschi family. Control of the town in later centuries was held by different powers. At first, the Baschi family subjected the town to the control of the nearby city of Orvieto. Then, in the fifteenth century, Siena seized it and turned it into an imposing fortress.
After the fall of the Republic of Siena, Montemerano became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, under which it had a period of great growth.
Walking through the narrow streets and alleys, every corner of the countryside reveals to us the various historical periods. The small and beautiful Church of St. George, with its portico, is one of the most interesting buildings to visit.
Equally fascinating is the Piazza Castello, a scenic square with an intact medieval layout and stone houses. The entrance to the town is framed by an arch that opens at the end of a short street on a steep slope, which allows one to see the beauty of the small square.
Today, this village is also known for its particular heart-shaped layout. Couples from around the world choose to come here to celebrate their wedding.
Recently Montemerano was chosen as the set for the short movie “Margherita Aldobrandeschi: a woman of Maremma”.
